TECNICELPA is a Portuguese non profitable professional Association for the Technicians of Pulp and Paper Industries. This association was formed in 1980 and now account with 400 individual members (technicians) and 100 collective members (companies), being The Navigator Company (NVG) and RAIZ part of these members.
Every four months, a newsletter called “info@tecnicelpa” is edited, publishing relevant facts of the pulp and paper industry to its members, with an overview on the latest market developments and new technologies applied to Pulp & Paper industry. RAIZ typically contributes with a short article and, in this edition (no. 63), the project WoodZymes is presented by Susana R. Pereira, Nazaré Almeida and Paula Pinto.
WoodZymes is described as an essential project to fulfill the pathway that has been built to develop joint and multidisciplinary activities covering entire value chains (from potential raw-material producers, end-users and R&D specialists), which is crucial to achieve a successful implementation of bio-economy within the existing industry.
The main objectives and activities of the project are shortly described, beginning in 2018 with the development, production and evaluation of specific extremophilic enzymes to aid the delignification and bleaching of pulp (short fiber and long fiber) to reduce the consumption of chemicals during bleaching. Through the end of 2019 and continuing in 2020, the focus was on testing of the produced enzymes within the consortium, in fractionation and processing of black liquor lignin, and also in pulp hemicelluloses to obtain fractions with high added value, that can be used as substitutes for chemicals normally derived from fossil resources (compounds for PU foams and MDF production, and additives in papermaking or coatings). The specific activities of both RAIZ and NVG are also summarized in the short article: enzyme testing in delignification and bleaching and evaluating the effluents composition from these processes and from the black liquor processing.
